World Antimicrobial Awareness Week: Use Antibiotics Wisely
World Antimicrobial Awareness Week takes place from 18 to 24 November each year. It is a global campaign led by the World Health Organization to raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance and to promote the safe use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines. World Health Organization
Antimicrobial resistance happens when bacteria and other germs change over time and no longer respond to medicines. This makes infections harder to treat and increases the risk of serious illness. Using antibiotics only when they are really needed is one of the most important ways we can all help. World Health Organization
The theme for World AMR Awareness Week 2025 is “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future”, highlighting the need for everyone to play their part, from health professionals to patients and the public. World Health Organization
Our practice is supporting this campaign by sharing a short awareness video about antibiotic use. Please take a moment to watch it and find out how small changes in how we use antibiotics can make a big difference.
How you can help
- Only use antibiotics when they are prescribed for you.
- Never share antibiotics with family or friends.
- Always follow the instructions on the label and complete the prescribed course.
- Do not keep leftover antibiotics for future use.
- Speak to a pharmacist or GP for advice about self care for coughs, colds and other minor illnesses.
